Smooch.com is a fun and accessible dating service which allows you to browse profiles, send and receive messages for free. You can approach finding suitable members in a variety of ways, including a standard search (the advanced version of which offers a variety of extras to specify, such as religion and ethnic origin) or taking recommendations from the site’s software. This software monitors your preferences and links you up with members who fit what you’re looking for. Another interesting way to find potential dates is to rate photos; if other members are similarly attracted to you then the site lets you know so that you can contact them and get to know each other a bit better.
Performing a basic search gave us a satisfactory number of results and provided enough complete profiles to give us a good idea of what the members were like. The site also tells you when members were last online, which is handy because then you know whether or not the person you’re interested in is likely to be checking their profile very often or whether it might just have been abandoned. Extra features are a little sparse and those that you pay for through a credit system aren’t always very useful or worth the money (virtual gifts for example). You can also use credit to receive SMS updates, which can be useful for people who are on the move and want to be kept up to date on what is happening with their account. This might be of particular interest if you want to know when someone has responded to a message you sent and you want to get back in touch as soon as you can.
Some people have made a good job of their profiles, though the pictures are frequently small and not of a good quality. That said, you can enlarge a photo and get a better view of it, which works well with higher definition uploads. Technical support is a bit of an afterthought on Smooch, although there is an FAQ you have to go through very specific sub-questions to reach an answer which doesn’t always suit what you were looking for. It can be a useful system, but it’s too prescribed and inflexible.
Smooch.com is free and generally does its job. Its credit system seems somewhat pointless at times and there are quite a few adverts to help support its “free” status. It’s worth building a profile and performing a couple of searches to see if anyone catches your eye though because you can always contact them, credited or not.
